ICRIN Project

Project “International Chernobyl Research and Information Network (ICRIN)”

The project "International Chornobyl Research and Information Network" (ICRIN) is part of a larger effort to help local communities "return to normal" during the recovery decade ending in 2016 in line with the 2007 UN General Assembly resolution and UN Action Plan on Chornobyl (http://crdp.org.ua/main/en/publication/content/534.htm?lightWords=action%20plan ).

The project draws on the work of the UN Chornobyl Forum, a joint research undertaking by eight UN agencies that published reassuring scientific findings in 2005. Dissemination of these findings in accessible language should help dispel widespread myths about radiation and give people helpful information on reducing risks to their health and well-being.

Funded by the UN Trust Fund for Human Security, this three-year (2009 – 2011) project is a joint effort by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO) and is implemented in three most-affected countries Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

Activities planned under the ICRIN project include the dissemination of information, through education and training for teachers, medical professionals, community leaders, and the media; providing local residents with practical advice on health risks and healthy lifestyles; the creation of Internet-equipped information centers in rural areas; and small-scale community infrastructure projects aimed at improving living conditions and promoting self-reliance.

ICRIN with the support of experts has established the Internet portal chernobyl.info has been created. It provides information on radiological safety in the aff ected areas for population. Th e portal is designed for a wide range of Internet users who are interested
in Chernobyl issues and radiological information in general.

In Ukraine during 2009-2010 eight ICT centres have been established in rural areas. ICT centres provide access to internet, improve access to information and training materials in affected areas. Nine community initiatives have been supported targeting socio-economic development, sport activities and improvement of recreational conditions. More than 10 trainings on healthy living at the Chornobyl-affected areas for teachers, forest workers, medical workers and youth has been conducted.
