Chornobyl Economic Development Forum
Nowadays, the socio-economic recovery and development, returning to a normalized life of affected communities is a largely recognized priority both for international community and national policy of Ukraine on mitigation of Chornobyl catastrophe consequences. The Chornobyl Economic Development Forum (ChEDF), initiated by the UNDP, was launched in 2005 by the representatives of central and regional authorities, local self-governance authorities, businesses, international and national governmental and non-governmental organizations. The ChEDF’s activities are directed to contributing to economic recovery, creating conditions to elaborate a successive strategy of economic development for affected territories, drawing the investments, strengthening and developing civil society. The first CheDF meeting has been conducted on the 1st of November 2005 in Chernihiv, the second one 4-5 of October 2006 in Korosten (Zhytomyr region), the third – on the 2-3 of November 2007 in Borodianka (Kyiv region) and the forth one 27th of November in Kyiv.
Thekey topics to be discussed at this year’s ChEDF meeting will be: - strategy of socio-economic development of “Chornobyl” regions in the context of state development policy and perspectives of Ukraine’s membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) as well as participation of Ukraine in the international integration processes; - role of businesses in a socio-economic development of a region; partnership among communities, authorities and businesses in implementing investments’ and socio-oriented projects; - creation of the conditions for implementing innovative kinds of economic activities in the region: wood-processing industry and municipal management; tourism; utilization of local energy resources, etc.
There are invited to participate in the Forum heads of central and local bodies of executive authorities, self-governance; representative of businesses, investment and consulting companies, potential investors, especially companies-members of the UN Global Compact in Ukraine as well as representatives of the embassies of Canada, Poland, Switzerland, delegation of the European Commission in Ukraine, leading experts in the field of socio-economic development, representatives of foreign and national NGOs and mass media.
