Yuri De Boer has graduated from M MSt European Literature, St. Edmund Hall. He has created Photo Exhibition “Mutants!(We, the Chornobyl children)”.
‘ Morethan twenty years after the disaster with the Chornoybyl nuclear power plant on 26 April 1986, the daily live of thousands of children is still affected by thesocio-economic, psychological and ecological consequences of theChornoybylcatastrophe. Two often overlooked social consequences are stigma and discrimination. In the portrait series Mutants! (We, the Chornobyl children), we meet some of these children, growing up in three Ukrainian villages in what is referred to as the 'Third and Fourth zone of radiation contamination'. Stereotypes of people from the affected areas exist all over the country – and abroad. Do they have three legs? Is their skin green? Do they walk and talk, just as we do? Are they dangerous? Will they bite me? Can they make me ill?’ Yuri de Boer

Roman Revkniv – has graduated from Leeds University, MA in Journalism. Roman is an author of the fantastic documentary “Chornobyl: the Survivours” and is currently working on a shorter, 20-min version of the film.
“Chornobyl: The Survivors” is my first documentary film. As a regular viewer of British documentaries, I know of no other documentary quite like this one about Chornobyl. It is factually informative and makes an innovative use of music, and it shows the difficulties which people face inside Chornobyl’s radiaton zones. I focus upon how these people survive in their environment. It is important because most people outside of Ukraine only have a vague image of Chornobyl’s reactor and the exclusion zone. But they also feel that Ukraine generally is radioactive, alien and a very unattractive place to visit. This is reinforced by their awareness of poorly children from Ukraine and Belarus who visit other countries because of radioactive contamination. My documentary then shows that radioactivity itself is not causing today’s health problems in Ukraine. The problems are rooted in a lack of economic support for the people inside the radiation zones. It concludes that Ukraine must change the overpowering negative images of Chornobyl which have been portrayed to the rest of the world since 1986. Chornobyl could and should be “rebranded” by Ukraine’s PR industry.” Roman Revkniv
