Self-governance and community development
Self-governance and community development - rendering assistance to community organisations in self-organisation and self-governance, increasing their potential for implementing their own priority programmes of social, economic, and ecological recovery and development.
Main achievements: § CRDP implemented the principle of “Community organisations and authorities: partners on recovery and development issues”. Namely, 279 community organisations (COs) were formed in 192 villages of Ukraine (involving over 20,000 community members), that resolve important socio-economic problems in the villages such as reconstruction of water pipe-lines and gasification, reconstruction of schools, baths, village health centers, and ambulatories, establishment of youth, public and service centers, etc. § In 2003-2007, community organisations implemented more than 190 recovery and development projects totalling over 3,6 m. USD of which, 1,3 m.UAH were contributed by CRDP. § Nearly, 200,000 people benefit from community-driven development projects supported by UNDP/CRDP. Community organisations successfully mobilised significant financial resources for the implementation of their own priority projects. On average, for the implementation of one project, a community organisation contributes 20% of the total amount, local village and rayon authorities – 40%, CRDP – 31%, other sponsors – 9%. § Due to CRDP’s strategic approach in cooperation with regional authorities in Ukraine, raiyon councils of Chornobyl-affected territories allocated over 4,1 m. UAH (app. 500,000 USD) of their 007 budget fund to support CO-based projects. § CRDP has developed a model of ‘Youth Centre’ - an institution specially designed to respond to young people’s needs. Youth Centre include: a gym, computers, IT-equipment and internet, meeting room for self-organised trainings, classes etc. As a result Youth Centres are both human resource centres and social enterprises for the village. During 2004-2007 CRDP has supported the establishment of 36 Youth Centres in the Chornobyl-affected areas. § In cooperation with leading scientific institutions, CRDP developed and distributed information materials (brochures, booklets, film, posters, CDs – totalling over 20 titles) regarding the consequences of the Chornobyl catastrophe and the conditions of safe living in the contaminated territories. In addition, CRDP conducted a series of trainings for teachers and medical workers on issues of radiation security and healthy life-styles. § CRDP supports publications, roundtables and seminars on Chornobyl-related issues and strategies for the recovery of both citizens and institutions. Over the years CRDP conducted regular monitoring of the coverage of Chornobyl-related issues by national and international mass media. In 2005, CRDP saw a great increase (almost three times more in comparison to 2004) in the number of publications, TV and radio reports in Ukrainian and International mass media on the UNDP/CRDP activities and results. In 2006 over 200 articles, TV and radio reports about UNDP/CRDP were produced. In the 1st half of 2007 97 articles, TV and radio reports on CRDP”s activities were produced. CRDP continuously organises donors’ field visits and press trips to the projects’ sites. |
