NEW POSTER FOR INFORMATION PROVISION ON RADIATION SAFETY

Today the new poster aiming at information provision on safety living at the radioactively polluted areas has been developed to be used in the education process at school and after-school activities. The poster has been developed by Ministry of Emergency of Ukraine based on the information materials developed by CRDP. It will be distributed among schools and other educational institutions via Community Development Centres at the Chornobyl-affected territories. Edition 500 copies.

One of the main recommendations is the necessity to check at Radiation Control Posts forest non-timber products (mushrooms and berries), vegetables and other locally produced food. Bright pictures illustrate methods of human irradiation by food-products reduction. In particular, processing of mushrooms and vegetables allow to make them almost safe for the human health. Pupils will also learn recommendations to process milk as this allows to reduce the concentrations of cesium in the final products in tens times.

Practical experience of the information provision at the Chornobyl-affected areas shows that the most difficult task is to change the behavior of population. For example, at Polissia areas that have been the most severely affected consumption of forest products is a part of the culture. Yet, in practice children inform parents on the necessity to process mushrooms, vegetables and milk the most effectively.

Prior to that UNDP Chornobyl Recovery and Development Programme      has developed the concept of the poster and tested it with experts http://www.crdp.org.ua/en/news/detail/92.htm
